The Horonobe URL Project has being pursued by JAEA to enhance the reliability of relevant disposal technologies through investigations of the deep geological environment within the host sedimentary formation at Horonobe, northern Hokkaido. The URL Project consists of two major research areas, Geoscientific Research and Research and Development on Geological Disposal Technologies, and proceeds in 3 overlapping phases, Phase I: Surface-based investigations, Phase II: Investigations during tunnel excavation and Phase III: Investigations in the URL, over a period of around 20 years. Phase III investigation was started in 2010 FY. The in-situ experiment for performance confirmation of engineered barrier system had been prepared from 2013 to 2014 FY at GL-350 m gallery, and heating by electric heater in simulated overpack had started in January, 2015. One of objectives of the experiment is acquiring data concerned with THMC coupled behavior. These data will be used in order to confirm the performance of engineered barrier system. This report summarizes the measurement data acquired from the experiment from December, 2014 to March, 2018. The summarized data of the EBS experiment will be published periodically.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is performing the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project, which includes a scientific study of the deep geological environment as a basis of research and development for geological disposal of high level radioactive wastes (HLW), in order to establish comprehensive techniques for the investigation, analysis and assessment of the deep geological environment in the sedimentary rock. This report integrates geophysical logging data obtained from the deep borehole investigations (HDB-1 $$sim$$ HDB-11) conducted in the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project (Phase I).

This report presents the results of shaft and gallery excavation performed focusing on crystalline rock (Mizunami) and sedimentary rock (Horonobe) from the point of view of construction technologies applied and the information obtained at respective construction stages, which is required for construction designing Facility construction in general, its goal is to build the facilities and the general and accrual designs are made based on the specific construction plan, while the construction of shafts and research galleries is being conducted based on the research plan. This construction is performed in the deep underground where significant uncertainties exit, for instance, it is difficult to obtain the precision information from preliminary investigation, construction work is inextricability liked to the stepwise research, and this very long-term construction period is likely to be receiving restrictions concerning environmental and social interests. Therefore, there are a number of conditions can not to be predicted at the initial design stage. Timely and appropriate actions will be taken to deal with these particular conditions, such as changing on design due to the revision of the research and construction plan while conducting excavation construction. In the series of construction activities: from input (i.e. construction conditions) to completion of the construction under the particular conditions, we summarize the experiences obtained at respective construction stages as the important information to transfer the technology to the similar construction in the future. This report describes the general consideration and summary of chapters at the beginning, and introduces the construction activities performed at each rock series.

The objectives of this study is to identify the research issues, which are to be conducted in the future underground research laboratory, about operation and logistics systems for the planning of future research and development program. The research programs and experiments,etc. were investigated for the geological disposal projects in overseas sedimentary rocks and coastal geological environments aiming to reflect in the future underground research facility plan in Japan. In the investigation, information on the engineered-barrier performance, design and construction of underground facilities, tunnel support, transportation and emplacement, and backfilling technology, etc. were collected. Based on these informations, the purpose, the content, and the result of each investigations and tests were arranged. The strategy and the aim in the entire underground research facility, and the flow of investigations and tests, etc. were also arranged from the purpose, the relations and the sequence of each investigation and experiment, and the usage of results, etc.

Long-term effect of creep displacement of host-rock on stability of engineered barrier system for TRU waste; Two-dimensional analysis by the non-linear viscoelasticity model

In the disposal concept of TRU waste, concentrated disposal of wastes forms in large cross-section underground cavities is envisaged, because most of TRU waste is no-heat producing in spite of large generated volume as compared with HLW. In the design of engineered barrier system based on large cross-section cavities, it is necessary to consider the long-term mechanical process such as creep displacement of the host rock from the viewpoint of the stability of engineered barrier system. In this study, the long-term creep displacement of the host rock was calculated using the non-linear viscoelasticity model and the effects on the stability of engineered barrier system was evaluated. As a result, in the disposal concept of crystalline rock, no creep displacement occurred at the time after 1 milion year. On the other hand, in the disposal concept of sedimentary rock, creep displacement of 80$$sim$$90mm occurred at the time after 1 milion year. Also, in this calculation, a maximum reduction of 45mm concerned with the thickness of buffer material was estimated. But these values resulted within allowance of design values. Therefore, these results show that the effects of the creep displacement on the stability of engieered barrier system would not be significant.

Organic acid dissolving in groundwater in the Mobara gas field

As a representative of natural marine groundwater, the author selected pumped water from a Quaternary sedimentary aquifer of the Mobara gas-field in Japan and measured the concentration of total organic carbon (TOC) and of organic acid anions (formic, acetic, lactic, succinic, humic, fulvic, propionic, valeric and butyric acids). The concentration of TOC ranged from 22$$pm$$1 to 24$$pm$$0mg/L. As organic acid anions, only succinic and fulvic acids were detected and each concentration was given to be from 5.8$$pm$$ 0.5 to 8.3$$pm$$0.3 and from 3.3$$pm$$0.2 to 3.5$$pm$$0.2mg/L, respectively. By consideration of the temperature and the [SO$$_{4}$$$$^{2-}$$] of the groundwater, it is inferred that the organic acid has been significantly decomposed by activities of microbes, such as the fermentation process, CH$$_{3}$$COO$$^{-}$$ + H$$_{2}$$O = HCO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ + CH$$_{4}$$.

Status of geochemical modeling of groundwater evolution at the Tono in-situ tests site, Japan In-situ Tests

Hydrochemical investigation of Tertiary sedimentary rocks at JNC's Tono in-situ tests site indicate the groundwaters are: (1)meteoric in origin, (2)chemically reducing at depths greater than a few tens of meters in the sedimentary rock, (3)relatively old [carbon-14 ages of groundwaters collected from the lower part of the sedimentary sequence range from 13,000 to 15,000 years BP (before present)] (4)Ca-Na-HCO$$_{3}$$ type solutions near the surface, changing to Na-HCO$$_{3}$$ type groundwaters with increasing depth. The chemical evolution of the groundwaters is modeled assuming local equilibrium for selected mineral-fluid reactions, taking into account the rainwater origin of these solutions. Results suggest it is possible to interpret approximately the "real" groundwater chemistry (i.e., pH, Eh, total dissolved concentrations of Si, Na, Ca, K, Al, carbonate and sulfate) if the following assumptions are adopted: (1)CO$$_{2}$$ concentration in the gas phase contacting pore solutions in the overlying soil zone = 10$$^{-1}$$ bar, (2)minerals in the rock zone that control the solubility of respective elements in the groundwater include; chalcedony (Si), albite (Na), kaolinite (Al), calcite (Ca and carbonate), muscovite (K) and pyrite (Eh and sulfate). It is noted, however, that the available field data may not be sufficient to adequately constrain parameters in the groundwater evolution model. In particular, more detailed information characterizing certain site properties (e.g., the actual mineralogy of "plagioclase", "clay" and "zeolite") are needed to improve the model. Alternative conceptual models of key reactions may also be necessary. For this reason, a model that accounts for ion-exchange reactions among clay minerals, and which is based on the results of laboratory experiments, has also been evaluated in the present study. Further improvements of model considering ion-exchange reactions are needed in future, however.

Data collection by literature survey on rock physical properties in Japan (II)

In order to understand the general thermal and mechanical properties of rock masses and initial stress of rock at depth, data were compiled from the published literature in Japan and collected from investigations carried out at Kamaishi mine and Tono mine. Statistical examinations derived the ranges, means and medians of the mechanical properties for the different rock types. It was confirmed that the correlations between the mechanical properties were in agreement with correlations determined previously in other similar surveys. The unconfined compressive strength of Neogene sedimentary rocks showed a tendency to increase with increasing depth ($$geq$$ 500 m). An examination of the measured initial stress data collected through literature surveys showed that the vertical stress can be approximated by the extent of gravitational loading at a particular point. There is an approximately linear relationship between the average stress in a horizontal plane and the depth. The lateral pressure coefficient tends to have a high value and large range at shallow depths, but tends towards $$<$$ 1 with increasing depth.

Radionuclide migration analysis in porous rock

JNC has been developed the performance assessment approaches for both fractured rock and porous rock. An equivalent continuum model is incorporated for solving the radionuclide migration in porous rock, while a discrete fracture network model is incorporated for solving the radionuclide migration in fractured rock (see more detail in Sawada et al. [1999]). This report describes the methodology, the data and the results of the performance assessment of porous rock. From the results of radionuclide migration analyses that were based on the hydrogeological properties obtained from the Neogene sedimentaly rock at the Tono mine, it was found that the release rate of selenium-79 and cesium-135 are dominant in porous rock. The sensitivity analyses using one-dimensional porous model revealed that hydraulic conductivity has more influences on the results than porosity does. In addition, it was found that smaller distribution coefficients of sandstone yield higher release rate than mudstone and tuff, and smaller distribution coefficients of saline water conditions yield higher release rate than fresh water conditions. The radionuclide migration in Neogene sedimentaly rock, where flow in rock matrix as well as in fractures are significant, was evaluated by superposing the results of porous model and fracture model. Since fracture model tends to yield more conservative results than porous model, it is obvious that the performance of Neogene sedimentary rock can be conservatively assessed by fracture model alone. The nuclide migration analyses performed in this report were based on the hydrogeological properties obtained at the depth between 20 meters and 200 meters frrom the ground surface. Therefore, it should be noted that the release rate at the depth of a future repository in Neogene sedimentary rock, 500 m, will be smaller than that shown in this report due to peemeability decrease from 200 m to 500 m.

Diffusivity Database (DDB) for Major Rocks; Database for the Second Progress Report

A database for diffusivity for a data setting of effective diffusion coefficients in rock matrices in the second progress report, was developed. In this database, 3 kinds of diffusion coefficients: effective diffusion coefficient (De), apparent diffusion coefficient (Da) and free water diffusion coefficient (Do) were treated. The database, based on literatures published between 1980 and 1998, was developed considering the following points. (1)Since Japanese geological environment is focused in the second progress report, data for diffusion are collected focused on Japanese major rocks. (2)Although 22 elements are considered to be important in performance assessment for geological disposal, all elements and aquatic tracers are treated in this database development considering general purpose. (3)Since limestone, which belongs to sedimentary rock, can become one of the natural resources and is inappropriate as a host rock, it is omitted in this database development. Rock was categorized into 4 kinds of rocks; acid crystalline rock, alkaline crystalline rock, scdimentaly rock (argillaceous/tuffaceous rock) and sedimentary rock (psammitic rock/sandy stone) from the viewpoint of geology and mass transport. In addition, rocks around neutrality among crystalline rock were categorized into the alkaline crystalline rock in this database. The database is composed of sub-databases for 4 kinds of rocks. Furthermore, the sub-databases for 4 kinds of the rocks are composed of databases to individual elements, in which totally, 24 items such as species, rock name, diffusion coefficients (De, Da, Do), obtained conditions (method, porewater, pH, Eh, temperature, atmosphere, etc.), etc. are input. As a result of literature survey, for De values for acid crystalline rock, totally, 207 data for 18 elements and one tracer (hydrocarbon) have been reported and all data were for granitic rocks such as granite, granodiorite and biotitic granite.
